LHAC Race to 2010 Starting Line
Saturday, March 6, 12:30pm at LHAC Gerace Scout Center (pavilion), 5001 Eleven Mile Road, Auburn, MI (N43° 35.731' W84° 06.455')
Gentlemen, start your engines for the Race to 2010!
In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in America, the Race to 2010 is showcasing one of the most popular activities for Cub Scouts — and a true Scouting icon — the Pinewood Derby.
Pinewood Derby cars will race across America using geocaching. The cars will be Travel Bugs moving from cache to cache. The finish line? Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree by July 26! All of the Pinewood Derby cars that arrive at the Jamboree will be displayed in a special geocaching area in Technology Quest. After the Jamboree, the cars will be released to continue their race … around the world.
The official start of the race is March 6.
The Lake Huron Area Council will have four Pinewood Derby Car entries in the Race to 2010. You are invited to come on out to the Council Service Center to give the cars a send-off. Whether you are a Scout or not, everyone is invited to participate.
The event is informal. It is an opportunity to meet and socialize with new and experienced geocachers. Come join us for a kick-off of the Get in the Game, Race to 2010 and to celebrate 100 years of Scouting. This event is part of the Get in the Game program, a collaborative effort of the Boy Scouts of America and Geocaching.com.
Geocaching Pinewood Derby Contest
Happy New Year everyone and Happy 100th Birthday Boy Scouts! There are so many special activities planned for this 100th Anniversary Celebration year.
If you’re into geocaching, we have a number of different activities planned for the year. First up is “Race to 2010.” Each Council in the United States (about 300) is eligible to enter a Pinewood Derby car into a race to the National Jamboree at Fort AP Hill this summer!
Lake Huron Area Council is sponsoring a competition for you to design and build a car to be entered into a drawing. If selected, your car will be outfitted with a specially registered travel bug tag that can be tracked on Geocaching.com. All the Pinewood Derby cars from all the participating Councils around the country will be released into geocaches on March 6th to start their race with a goal of getting to the 2010 National Jamboree. These cars will be picked up by geocachers from all over the country and deposited into other geocaches slowly making their way towards their goal.
All of the Pinewood Derby cars that make it to the Jamboree will be displayed in a special geocaching area in “Technology Quest.” Prizes will be awarded for the cars that travel the farthest, pass through the most hands, or have the most creative routes. Even if they don’t make it to the Jamboree, you’re still eligible for prizes because the Geocaching.com web site keeps track of all that information and all travel bugs will be checked. When the Jamboree is finished, the cars will be released again to continue their race…around the world!
If your Scouts (Cub Scout, Boy Scout, or Venturer) are interested in participating, they must design and build a car and send it to the Lake Huron Area Council office with Scout’s name, rank, address, unit number, and phone number by February 19th to be entered into a random drawing. Please be aware that if your car is selected, you will not get it back as it will be busy traveling the world and creating its own adventures. If your car is not selected, you will be able to pick it up from the office after March 6th.
We’ll be following our Council car’s progress in upcoming issues of the E-Scouter as well as introducing other geocaching activities! A special “Treasures of Scouting” geocache series will be coming soon. For further information on the Race to 2010 or our other geocaching events, contact Jeanne Armstrong at 989-295-7236. Stay tuned here for future ways to “Get in the Game!”
