Training Opportunities
To all Scouters and their families and friends, our wishes for a very happy 2010!
As we welcome the new year, we also welcome a new century in Scouting, one that promises to be every bit as exciting as the first. There will be changes, of course. That is a given. Change happens. We may not like whatever the new thing is, but it is there just the same. And, if we are to continue to give our youth the best opportunity to grow, we need to understand what prompted that change and how to make it work for us. That understanding comes easiest through training.
One of the best training opportunities coming up is the University of Scouting. This is a full day of “supplemental training” courses just for adult leaders. Some are just an hour long … 50 minutes really, and some cover two or more periods. There are courses for Cub Scout leaders, Boy Scout leaders, Commissioners, and committee members; in fact there is something for everyone. And, when you have a period or two off, you can visit the many Midway Displays, meet new friends, and talk with those you probably have not seen in several months.
The fee of $15 covers everything you’ll need for the day including lunch. Registration forms may be found HERE
. Get your registration in before January 15th to avoid the late fee. The University of Scouting will be at the Standish Sterling Middle School (same as last year) on Saturday, January 30, 2010. Register BEFORE the 8:30 Opening.
Another great training opportunity is Wood Badge. This program has been going on for over 90 years and is continually evolving. Wood Badge is six solid days of classes and activities. During this time you exist as a member of a Scout patrol. Working closely with the members of your patrol, you will learn how to set goals for yourself and your unit and how to effectively achieve them. You learn how to lead, how to anticipate and handle problems, and how to get the most from your team. You’ll also have opportunities to practice these principles.
The Wood Badge experience will benefit you in every aspect of your life. Whenever you are working with others, adult or youth, you will be able to draw on this valuable training, and let it guide you.
Wood Badge is not for everyone, but it might be just right for you. For more on the LHAC 2010 Wood Badge course, read the flyer
